Concern over the changing needs of the industry, was one of the issues that captured the attention of top executives of mining in the opening ceremony of 2014’s Expomin. Energy shortage, water stress and the empowerment of communities, were aspects which took part of the agenda of this meeting.

The first to refer to these concerns was the Minera Lumina Copper’s Executive Chairman, Nelson Pizarro, who revealed the concerns facing the national mining. “We are facing a scenario where low productivity and competitiveness are the protagonists. There is energy shortage, water stress, and higher environmental standards, forcing us to find new ways”, said Pizarro.

After the intervention of the executive, it was the turn of Huechuraba’s mayor, Carlos Cuadrado, who took the opportunity to refer to the importance of tax reform as a vehicle to generate substantial changes to social and economic level.

In relation to the same theme, the Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams, stressed the need to promote changes in the regulatory aspect of the mining industry. Example of this are the proposed reforms to the repeal of the DL600, FUT removal and reactivation of mining cluster. “We will drive the mining cluster and relieve it to ministerial level,” said Secretary of State.

Sonami’s President Alberto Salas, also spoke at the opening ceremony of 2014’s Expomin. The executive expressed concern to the proposals of the new government, led by President Michelle Bachelet. “Regarding the FUT, is a key lever for mining. Its removal can affect the incentive to save. For its part, the repeal of Decree 600, can be detrimental to the development of mining, due to the watchful eyes of foreign investors “said Alberto Salas.

For his part, the Mining Council’s President, Joaquín Villarino, referred to the innovation policy being developed by the industry to solve the problems it has. “Desalination is not the only alternative for water demand mining requires as its main obstacle is the energy”, Villarino said.

Expomin 2014 will take place in the course of this week at the offices of Espacio Riesco. New Mining & Energy Magazine will be present at this meeting with special coverage of this important event for mining.
