The 183 mine waste deposits built in the territory will be supervised and monitored by a new Tailings Deposits Department dependent from Sernageomin.

In order to overcome the dispersion of technical responsibilities for tailings deposits, the Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams, announced the decision of the National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin) to create a new Department of Tailings Deposits with which seeks to group permission tasks and control of materials such as hydraulic stability, geomechanics, physics and chemistry of 183 tailings deposits in the territory of Chile, according to the latest land registry released on the website www.sernageomin. cl.

The Minister Williams argued that “with this initiative we seek is answered and be met in a more integrated and expedited way the obligations law impose to Mining Ministry and to Sernageomin, regarding the sector observations on Tailings Deposits projects, and also the oversight and monitoring to the orders, recommendations and fines that are taught to ensure the mining safety of these deposits”.

The authority added that “it is clear that mining is a crucial dimension of the economy, and this should be consistent with safety of mine workers, their families and communities or towns that are near to a tailing deposit. In this sense it is extremely important that mining activity always find a way to be friendly to other activities in the territory”.
