Meet the new problems and sustainable public policies involving the mining industry, is the purpose of the second version of the seminar “Sustainable Trends” under Expomin 2014.

With a special appeal to government authorities, professional actors unveiled the importance of sustainability in the mining industry in terms of economic, environmental and social ones. For the ombudsmen, the lack of a distribution policy in northern regions from the State, has influenced demonstrations of citizenship against the development of mining projects.

In this sense, for the President of the Mining Council, Joaquín Villarino, there is a social demand that the State has not done a good job. “Since there is not a regional tax policy, an imbalance occurs, triggering that mining should bear the costs of the demand of the community,” said Villarino.

For his part, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Mining, Alejandro Guillier also agreed on the lack of a regional tax policy, which has meant that the mining industry does not develop an identity in the loop. “The north was the area where the modernization of the country is generated by mining. Despite this, there is now a total lack of identity, because the payment of taxation takes place in the central area, and the north is only deteriorating, ” Alejandro Guillier said.

Paradigm shift of mining companies

Another point that was analyzed as a primary factor in the pursuit of sustainability, is the coordination between the public and private sectors for greater social investment in communities. “There must be a shared commitment to make a leap in mining sustainability. Paradigm should be changed according to the new needs of the civil society, “said the general manager of the AIA, Fernando Cortés.

In this sense, the role of mining companies is critical to understanding the new social and environmental needs of localities. This was confirmed by Senator Alejandro Guillier, who took the opportunity to call on mining companies relating to improving relations with the environment in which they are located. “It is vital that companies understand that there are needs that have not been made visible by the private sector”.

The Expomin 2014 XVIII Congress will be further developed during the afternoon with the seminar “Seawater for Mining”. Follow coverage of New Mining & Energy Magazine this meeting.
