Copper exports rose 6.4% in July to U.S. $ 3,351 million

The value of Chile’s copper exports rose 6.4% year on year in July, to $ 3.351 million, amid a recovery in local production, according to data released Wednesday by the Central Bank.

The value reached by the copper exports as of July has been accompanied by a rise in production in recent months, which contrasts with the decline in the international price of the metal.

The shipments of copper, accounting for more than half of all Chilean exports totaled U.S. $ 42,723 million in 2012.

The copper industry in Chile is led by state Company Codelco. Also participating international giants such as BHP Billiton, Xstrata, Anglo American and Antofagasta Minerals.

Balance Of trade

While the trade balance recorded a deficit of U.S. $ 254 million in July, as a result of exports of U.S. $ 6.459 million and imports of U.S. $ 6.713 million.

The export value represents 9.2% more than recorded in the same month last year, while imports rose 6.5%.

The deficit also compares favorably with a deficit of U.S. $ 391 million that Chilean trade balance reached in July 2012, according to central bank data.

With July result, the trade balance accumulated in the first seven months of 2013 a surplus of U.S. $ 2,232 million, resulting in exports of U.S. $ 46.161 million, 1.3% higher than those recorded in the same period last year and imports U.S. $ 43.929 million, 5.5% more than in 2012.

Chile’s trade balance ended the year 2012 with a surplus of U.S. $ 4,208 million, 61% less than in the previous year.
