Position 31 in world WEF ranking:
Chile is in 6th position in the region in ranking evaluating energy matrix
Our country follows Colombia, Uruguay, Perú, Brazil, and Costa Rica because of its poor evaluation in the item that qualifies industry environmental sustainability

Energy architecture of Chile is the sixth best evaluated within Latin America as reported last Tuesday by the first WEF report on this matter.

This ranking – the company has scheduled to publish on an annual basis- has set our country in position No. 31 within the 105 economies that were subject to strength and weakness tests on an integral approach to their energy systems: economic, environmental, and energy safety approach.

“Economic and development growth” was evaluated emphasizing efficiency and cost of energy supplied, “access to energy and energy safety” evaluating diversity and the quality of generation sources; and finally, “environmental sustainability” that qualifies greenhouse gases and emissions as well as the proportion of low-carbon energy sources.

It was in the latter where Chile obtained its worst evaluation taking position No. 70. This poor qualification left the country out of competition to obtain one of the first positions in Latin America and was beaten by Colombia (6°), Uruguay (12°), Perú (15°), Costa Rica (19°), and Brazil (21°) in the general ranking.

“Particulate matter contamination is higher in Chile than the world average reaching 53.5 micrograms per cubic meter compared against world average of 37.7 mg”, Roberto Bocca, Director of Energy Industry at WEF, indicated.

Notwithstanding, the expert states our country is in a good position with respect to the safety and energy cost items (both in position No. 35).

Global character

In the international scope leaders in “World 2013 Energy Architecture Performance index” are Norway, Sweden, France, Sweden, France, Swiss, and New Zealand.

These countries were included for their solid energy policies as well as the multiple resources they have to generate cheap, abundant and relatively clean electric power with important contribution to national income.

In the sample analysis breakdown an important point was that none of the top-position countries is an OPEP member. Likewise, U.S.A. the most relevant economy on the earth, is in position No. 55.

Thus, considering emerging countries, including BRICS group, Brazil is the best evaluated even surpassing Russia (27°), South Africa (59°), India (62°), and China (74°).

“Many developing countries continue fighting to meet the basic energy needs of their citizens. 12% of countries analyzed supply electric power to less than 50% their population”, the report stated.

Likewise, WEF made a call to improve global policies on subsidies granted to fossil fuels and to deal with efficient management of resources in a global fashion.
