AmCham schedule meeting with Treasury for incentives before the end of DL 600

The U.S. ambassador called for “clear rules” to the tax reform proposal of President Bachelet. “When things change it is important to consult all stakeholders, and in turn make decisions in a reasonable time”, he said.

The Chilean American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham)’s President, Kathleen C. Barclay, announced that she will meet with officials of the Treasury for details of new investment incentives that generate the tax reform that seeks to carry forward the Michelle Bachelet President.

The appointment will be implemented in the coming weeks and will be key to future investments from the United States.

“Obviously (U.S. investors) are keen to talk with different groups and will talk to us, we are doing our job”, said the executive.

She added, “yet this topic (tax reform) it is ongoing. We are doing our job to see the impact, but we have confidence in Chile, its people and its institutions. We need to allow time for dialogue”.

The latter concern generated by the elimination of DL 600, which has strengthened trade between the two nations. Through the instrument created in 1974, foreign direct investments into our country over U.S. $ 90,000 million, meaning the bulk of the total investment to Chile during the last decades. However, the Bachelet’s proposal also considers remove for new projects, in order to obtain higher tax revenues.

Kathleen C. Barclay said: “We want to listen, do our home work, and then say”, recalling that “I do not see who will get the benefits. They are saying they have another program, but I must understand before say.”

A call to establish “clear rules” amid debate in Congress over tax reform made the U.S. ambassador, Michael Hammer, in the context of a business breakfast held yesterday.

In his speech, the diplomat said that “the new Bachelet administration is considering changes to various kinds”. In this regard, he added that “to continue contributing to the economy and provide value to society, which requires the U.S. company and, indeed, all companies, is political and economic stability, and clear rules.” Hammer said that you should listen to everyone involved.

“When things change, it is important to consult all stakeholders and, in turn, make decisions in a reasonable time for companies to clarify and adapt themselves,” said the diplomat.

When asked about his views on tax reform, the diplomat said that while it is “entirely a discussion of the Chilean people,” said that “it is important to listen to all stakeholders”.

In fact, he said that “as is done in a way they can understand, the rules are the same for all U.S. businesses, and the entire world”.

“As long as there is transparency and treat everyone equally, and of course we will follow, we note,” he added.

He announced that on 20 and 21 May will be in Chile the US Energy Subsecretary to encourage the exchange of ideas, taking advantage of the open channel of communication with the Ministry of Energy in Chile. The diplomat said that the United States seeks to “help Chile in their efforts to transition to a cleaner and more efficient energy,” so he had already met with the head of the ministry, Máximo Pacheco.

“Chile could have the opportunity to purchase natural gas from the United States”, he concluded.
