The project would involve both contractor workers as well as subcontractors.

Aurora Williams, the Minister of Mining met with the Confederation of Copper Workers’s President (CTC), Manuel Ahumada, the CTC’s National Director, Miguel Santana, besides the Representatives of the University of Santiago de Chile Tamara Wong and José Miguel Araya.

In the meeting, the first guidelines for a training project were established, but with a long-term view and involving both contractor workers and subcontractors.

“We want to recognize the spirit of dialogue that CTC has shown. Today they have presented us with a very important project developed in conjunction with the University of Santiago. This focuses on training mining subcontractors or contractors workers, but with a vision, in the sense that workers can actually have a conducive training to generate a development job, “said the Minister.

Meanwhile, Ahumada stressed that this project has a different label, because “it is focused on the development of a national training policy with a country view, looking at which development productive model, what are the prospects of mining and how we will actually improve conditions for workers. For this reason we have created a partnership with the USACH to effectively have a technical and development support for this policy.

It can be recalled that an agreement between the CTC and Agema (Business Professional Association for Mining and Associated Products) was signed in 2013, “which allowed to create a common fund through surplus of 1% of companies for training”, explained the secretary of State.

He also emphasized that there is a lower productivity in some areas when outsource this beyond the qualifications of the individual, rather focused on working conditions. “If an assessment of internalization can be done from Codelco, a project of improvement of people can be added, it becomes a situation that really allows the development of each of the workers who are now considered external”, he said.
